On upper bounds for algebraic degrees of APN functions

We study the problem of existence of APN functions of algebraic degree n over F2n . We characterize such functions by means of derivatives and power moments of the Walsh transform. We deduce some non-existence results which mean, in particular, that for most of the known APN functions F over F2n the function x −1 + F (x) is not APN, and changing a value of F in a single point results in non-APN functions.

We prove that functions f : F2m → F2m of the form f(x) = x + g(x) where g is any non-affine polynomial are APN on at most a finite number of fields F2m . Furthermore we prove that when the degree of g is less then 7 such functions are APN only if m ≤ 3 where these functions are equivalent to x.
